EARTH CREATIVE IN THE NEWS, Sept/Oct ’23

EVENTS

In the past two months Earth Creative has seen a major
influx of remarkable talents joining its community,
from educators and scientists, to artists and activists!

Jodie Nelson is now part of the Earth Creative Executive as its new Vice-President. She is also the newly appointed Chair of the Earth Creative Artists committee which was led brilliantly by Kathy Fahlman DeWalt since 2020.

Jodie Nelson, an artist advisor, curator, and consultant, lives by the mantra: “the power of art is transformative.” Jodie launched her career in art advocacy with a focus on ecofeminism 25 years ago. In 1999, she curated shows to raise awareness for river conservation with National Geographic photographers and explorers. She also helped curate notable art events, including “Heaven and Earth,” “Speak for the Trees,” “What Does Compassion Look Like?” “A Precarious Edge,” “BAIT: Beyond An Inconvenient Truth,” and “Climate Pledge: In Glass.” As the owner and director of Press Reign, a boutique arts admin agency, she has crafted projects featured in Art in America, PBS, The New York Times, Seattle Times, Forbes, Hyperallergic, and Culture Trip. Stay tuned for her upcoming podcast, “Female Frequency,” which delves into the world of ecofeminism and the reclamation of spirituality, art, and ecology in the global economy.

Laura Tyler joined the Earth Creative Board of Directors, and is now the new
Chair of the Science and Education Committee, taking over from Kim Davenport who lead it brilliantly for three years.

Laura taught more than 30 years as a science educator for Seattle Public Schools and worked as Washington State’s Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) curriculum coordinator.Currently, she is School Support for the non-profit EarthGen. She creates and develops Environmental and Climate Change Curricula. She provides support to teachers, schools, and districts looking to reduce their carbon footprint. and fosters positive working relationships with community organizations, Tribes and BIPOC groups. Networking with other like-minded environmental organizations to gain new insights and leverage a greater impact.

Myka Stewart is Earth Creative’s new Social Media Coordinator

Who is Myka?
He/him and they/them pronouns

From St. Louis, MO, a sophomore at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN studying Cello Performance and Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Natural Science. Outside of classes he loves taking care of his many houseplants, crocheting, and spending time outside, especially with friends, family, and their dog.

Why is Myka passionate about the climate crisis?

Their love of nature and preserving our incredible and diverse wildlife and ecosystems, protecting the Earth for current and future generations of humans and wildlife, and understanding that marginalized communities are often facing more negative impacts of climate change than those in power that contribute the most to the problem.

NEW PARTNERS PAGE

The Earth Creative website now has a new Partners page, which demonstrates the full breadth of its initiatives and reach. We firmly believe that progress on the climate change front can only happen with strong alliances and the merging of resources.

Support Earth Creative

Earth Creative is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Federal ID #85-1950354. All donations to Earth Creative are tax-deductible and no amount is too small.

A contribution to Earth Creative through your IRA brings benefits to us and to you! IRA owners 70½ and older can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) that counts toward your required minimum distribution. A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. It might be one of the most tax-efficient ways to support our environmental stewardship. Consult your advisor today to learn more about giving through your IRA and support of work towards a sustainable ecosystem for future generations. Remember, please make arrangements as soon as possible. For your QCD to count toward your 2023 required minimum distribution, we will need to receive and deposit your check before December 29, the last business day of the year.

In early September, Earth Creative Executive Director Christophe Chagnard met Trang Cao at a social gathering. Upon sharing our vision, Trang, who is based in San Francisco, offered to recruit new artists with a focus on climate change and justice. The effect was immediate and Earth Creative is currently experiencing its fastest rate of growth, attracting to its ranks some extraordinary creators. A warm welcome to Trang!

Trang Cao, PhD, collects old keys with incongruent teeth. Formally trained as a writer and cross-cultural historian, she earned her doctoral degree at the University of California, Berkeley, exploring the ways cultural productions shaped and propelled social movements. For the past decade, Trang has worked at the intersection of community activation, education, environmentalism, and the arts. Through creative storytelling and development of immersive learning experiences, she has supported numerous eco-driven organizations focused on co-building community capacity for climate resilience. These include ecoliteracy programs with the Olohana Foundation ; artist residency and maker program with TreeCasa; solar workshops with Liter of Light; and indigenous solutions series with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN – Oceania). Trang continually seeks creative collaborations with those who work to amplify ecosystem awareness and climate justice in unexpected ways. Born in Saigon and raised in Toronto, she now calls the unceded Ohlone territory known as Oakland, California, home. More about her here .

Here are some of the artists who joined
Earth Creative in September and October.

Alexandra (Ali) Blum
Painter, Printmaker, San Francisco

“Art has been a constant in my life. One of my earliest memories is of drawing in my father’s art studio. I am interested in capturing the moment of seeing when something changes and the magic in the everyday. Hiraesh — a home sickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home that maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past is essential to my work. My interior world is of memories of childhood, books, songs, and stories steers my work.

My work is inspired by my daughter Cecile, father Zevi Blum, and childhood memories.”

Calixto Robles
Painter, Printmaker, Sculptor, San Francisco

“I am from Oaxaca Mexico and moved to San Francisco in 1983. I am a painter, printmaker, and ceramic sculptor, who is inspired by Meso-American and First Nation people’s culture as well as sacred imagery of ancient Eastern and Western cultures. I use natural and supernatural figures such as angels, eagles, jaguars, horses, hearts, and moons.

I create work around issues that I am personally invested in my entire life: social justice and climate change. I make art to empower people to find strength to fight for justice. My work is positive and shows symbols of cultural history, survival, and strength.”

“My climate performance, The Alaska Suite: a story of beauty, loss and hope , is coming to Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles the first weekend of December.”

Alaska Suite Multimedia Climate Concert – Dec 1 and 2
Seattle-based, award-winning composer Nelda Swiggett brings her five-piece chamber jazz ensemble to Port Townsend, Sequim and Port Angeles on Dec. 1-2 for a tour of her original work, “The Alaska Suite: a story of beauty, loss and hope” — a musical reverie on the tenuous beauty of the Arctic.
