STUDENT CLIMATE PROJECT

Student Climate Project (SCP)

Earth Creative funds projects proposed and executed by students that focus on climate change and involve both art and science. Budgets are limited to $1000 for elementary schools, $1500 for Middle Schools and $2500 for high schools.

Students, singly or in groups, research an area of interest through the lens of climate change and propose a project which results in some sort of shareable product- a research paper, a presentation, an artistic creation or some other cumulative outcome. These projects can be pursued through school coursework with the guidance of a class and teacher, through a student club, or through an internship or other school-guided experience.

The projects may focus more on the science side or the artistic side, as long as both are substantially included. “Science” may include the natural sciences and social sciences, as well as applied sciences such as architecture, construction, engineering, urban planning, wastewater management, water quality, wildlife and habitat management, pollution cleanup, recycling and policy making at various levels of government.  “Arts” may include writing, music, visual art, theater, dance, storytelling, media or live performances of various kinds. It may also include the role of artists and arts organizations in the communication and expression of climate change information or their adaptation (greening) of their own organizations.

Projects may include partnering with existing environmental organizations to participate in events or activities they already offer. In that case, funding might be used for transportation or fees, for example. Or projects may be developed by students, perhaps focusing on their own hyper-local place- school, community, neighborhood, etc. In that case, funding can also be used for materials, equipment, professional fees or services, etc.

Students will exercise skills including research, data collection and analysis, writing, interviewing, critical thinking, critical analysis of various forms of expression, and the generation of expressive responses to scientific findings.

The experience culminates in the public sharing of final projects, either live or online. Projects may be submitted for further review, editing and possible posting on the Earth Creative website. Certificates will be awarded by Earth Creative at the end of the process.
